
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Working)
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom with high ceilings sounds like a great idea until you remember one thing: steam. Bathrooms are basically humidity chambers. All that condensation creates tiny paths for electricity to wander where it shouldn’t. If your insulation isn’t up to the task, you’re looking at leakage currents or, worse, a total short circuit. Here is how we actually stop that from happening. It starts with the seals A basic quartz tube just won’t cut it here. We use high-grade dielectric seals at the ends to keep moisture from sneaking into the filament chamber. It has to be a tight, airtight fit. Why? Because if steam gets inside the lamp envelope, it messes with the halogen gas and the whole tube burns out way too fast. To prevent that, we use silicone or fluororubber gaskets. They grip the heater housing and keep the dampness out. Dealing with leakage In a wet room, the only thing standing between you and a nasty shock is the distance between the live electrode and the grounded chassis. To play it safe, we use a double-insulation approach. First, the lamp holder has to be a perfect match for the tube’s voltage and wattage. Then, we use reinforced materials that don’t get brittle or mushy when the humidity hits 90%. And a pro tip: make sure the grounding wire is bonded directly to the metal casing. That way, if a seal ever fails, the breaker trips instantly instead of turning the heater shell into a live wire. The tricky part: Heat vs. Seals Here’s the thing. Tight seals are amazing for safety, but they’re not great for airflow. When you wrap a lamp in a waterproof housing, the heat gets trapped. This makes the contact points get way hotter than they would in an open room. If you push too much wattage into a small, sealed box, you might actually melt the terminal insulation. It’s a bit of a balancing act. You want a high IP rating to keep the water out, but you need enough breathing room so the lamp doesn’t cook itself. Getting that balance right is the difference between a heater that lasts years and one that dies in a few months.
