When we’re designing these for your home, the biggest headache isn’t actually the heat—it’s the light. Specifically, that harsh blue and UV light that makes you squint and puts a lot of stress on your eyes. Taming the glow Here’s how we handle it. Most standard infrared lamps give off a blinding white light. To stop that, we don’t just use plain glass. We use specialized coatings or “doped” quartz glass. Think of it as a filter. It lets the warmth—the long-wave infrared—slide right through to your skin, but it blocks the high-frequency light. The result? You get all the heat, but the lamp just gives off a soft, dim glow instead of a spotlight. Heat vs. Comfort We also spend a lot of time tuning the wattage. We want the lamp to hit its peak temperature fast. Why? Because when a heater takes forever to warm up, people tend to lean in closer to feel the heat. That’s how you get skin burns. By making it heat up quickly, you can stay at a safe distance and still feel cozy. The trade-off Now, there’s a catch. Using filtered glass means we lose a tiny bit of heat efficiency compared to clear quartz. You lose a little bit of “oomph” to keep your eyes safe. But we’ve found a workaround. We tweaked the shape of the reflectors to bounce the remaining infrared energy straight down. It keeps the warmth focused exactly where you need it. One last tip: make sure your power supply is stable. If the voltage jumps around, the filament can flicker or get too hot, which might push that light back into the “blinding” range. Keep the power steady, and the glow stays soft.
